Cup and Table Games
Stack Cup: Official Rules
- Players
- 4+ (two teams)
- Equipment
- large table, 6 cups per player, in two colors, 1 large center cup, 2 table tennis balls
Objective
Be the first team to sink, finish and stack every one of your team's cups.
Setup
Two teams of two or more. Each team takes six cups per player, in its own color, and pours beer into each, about a third full. Mix both teams' cups together in one cluster in the middle of the table, touching, around a large center cup filled to the top. Each team takes one ball and stands on its own side.
Official Rules
Rule 1. The relay
Rule 1.1. Each team lines up its players in a shooting order. On the whistle, each team's first shooter begins.
Rule 1.2. The shooter bounces the ball off the table into any cup of their team's color. A ball that goes straight in without touching the table doesn't count.
Rule 1.3. When the shot goes in, the shooter takes that cup out of the cluster, finishes it, stacks it on the team's stack, and passes the ball to the next teammate in order.
Rule 1.4. A shooter shoots until they make it. There are no turns between teams. Both teams shoot at the same time.
Rule 2. The other team's cups
Rule 2.1. A ball that lands in the other team's cup is a gift. The other team takes that cup out and stacks it as if they had made it. The shooter finishes it.
Rule 2.2. A ball that lands in the center cup is a misfire. The shooter takes a drink from the center cup, and keeps shooting.
Rule 3. Winning
Rule 3.1. The first team to stack every one of its cups wins.
Rule 3.2. The losing team finishes the center cup, together.
House Rules Register
- Penalty drink for each miss. Every missed shot is a drink before the shooter may shoot again. Commissioner's Discretion. Slower. Considerably.
- The winners drink the center cup. Approved. Some tables regard the center cup as a trophy.
- Teams may block the other team's shots. Prohibited. That is a different game, and possibly a fight.
- Fewer cups for a quicker game. Approved.
Official Rulings
Is Stack Cup the same as Rage Cage? No. Stack Cup is a team race; Rage Cage is every player for themselves. See the full ruling in Part 6.
Two shooters' balls land in the same cup at the same time. Whose is it? It belongs to the team whose color it is. The other shooter has made a gift (Rule 2.1).
Penalties and Signals
- A gift (a ball in the other team's cup). Signal: the Official holds out both hands, palms up, toward the other team.
- Team stacked out (game over). Signal: the Official raises both fists, one stacked on the other, overhead.
From the Archives
Stack Cup is often confused with Rage Cage, including by people playing it. The Commission's ruling on the difference is the most requested document in its archive, after the bounce shot.
Zero-Proof Option
Fill the cups with any non-alcoholic drink. Everything else plays as written.
