The Drinking Game Commission

Official ruling

The Broken Ring

What happens if someone breaks the ring in Kings Cup?

The Question

A card comes out, a gap opens in the ring, and three players announce three different penalties. Does the game end, does the player take the King's Cup, or does play continue?

Review

The core record already provides the base call: a player who opens a gap in the ring drinks. The Commission found that tables differ mainly on whether the break ends the game or substitutes the center cup before the fourth King is drawn.

Ending the game early abandons the card rules still in play. Assigning the King's Cup before the fourth King replaces a clear card-based consequence with an improvised one. The ring is an infraction, not an alternate ending.

The Ruling

After review, the ruling on the field is as follows. A player who breaks the ring takes the standard Rule 1.3 penalty, then play continues with the remaining cards in their existing order.

The center cup remains in service. Only the player who draws the fourth King receives the King's Cup under Rule 3.1.

A table may adopt a different broken-ring consequence only if it records that choice in the House Rules Register before the first card is drawn. A new penalty announced while the gap is still open is not a house rule. It is an appeal made under pressure.

The ruling stands.

Signal

The Official draws a circle in the air, cuts through it with one hand, then points toward the next player.
