The Drinking Game Commission

Official ruling

Redemption

Does the losing team get a redemption round, and how does it work?

The Question

When a team's last cup is sunk, is the game over? Or does that team get a chance to shoot back?

Review

The Commission reviewed games that ended the moment the last cup fell, and games in which the losing team shot back. It found that the first kind ends with a celebration and the second kind ends with a better celebration, or with overtime. It found no case in which the losing team preferred the first kind.

The Ruling

After review, the ruling on the field is as follows. Redemption is mandatory.

When a team's last cup is sunk, that team shoots for redemption. Its players shoot one ball at a time, taking turns, until one of them misses. A bounce shot during redemption sinks only the cup it lands in. No re-racks are allowed.

If the team sinks every remaining cup, the game goes to overtime. Each team sets up three cups in a triangle and play resumes, with the team that forced overtime shooting second. Redemption applies again in overtime.

If the team misses, the game is over. The winning team is announced by the Official. The losing team finishes any cups still standing on the winning side, then racks the next game.

The ruling stands.
